CHAPTER 11

Rene released me and moved toward a sapling springing from the ground. His fingers traced over the tip of the young tree. “It’s nothing for you to worry about. I will be more careful in the future.”

The dark feeling spread over my skin like an oily caress, and I shivered at the uneasy sensation. It was the first time Rene lied to me. Whether it was intentional or inadvertent, didn’t matter. I had been a lot of things since my transition, but I had been truthful.

Before I could voice my displeasure, he dropped his hand. The clouds chose that moment to unleash their displeasure, and the droplets dripped from the branches onto our heads, dripping from our hair to soak our clothes.

Rene seemed obvious to the cold damp weather and his gaze remained locked on the saturated earth. The patter of droplets echoed softly around us, reminding us that nature was far more powerful than we were. The overseer looked beaten and worn for the first time since I had met him.

His shoulders remained broad, but his expression was haunted, as if he was unsure what the future held. For anyone else, that would be normal, but he was beyond the mortal coil. He held the future of the vampire species and possibly that of the witches and humans in his powerful hands. I had the urge to hug him and tell him everything would be alright.

“Rene, are you okay? Is it Father Oren or...” I didn’t need to explain my concerns about his strange powers and unseen form.

He lifted his head as the rainwater trailed down his cheek. “I am fine. Or I will be in time. Nathaniel is one of hundreds I have lost over the centuries.” He said it as if it were normal to lose that many people in one’s lifetime. Maybe it was for a vampire, but I couldn’t imagine such heartache.

I approached him slowly. The soil made a sucking sound as my shoes compressed the damp earth. “I don’t think that makes it easier.” The compulsion to comfort him was overwhelming, and my hand slipped to his waist before I could question my motives.

He stared down at me as if I had given him a priceless gift. The emotion in his eyes was haunting and exhilarating. He moved so slowly I froze as the soft breeze tickled my cheek. He was giving me a chance to pull away, but under the dark forest canopy there was nowhere to run, and I found I didn’t want to.

The trees swayed to the breeze of Mother Nature as the shadows welcomed us in its shroud of darkness. His cool touch was comforting, and it sent shivers skittering down my spine. Flickers of moonlight danced above the branches, creating an ethereal illusion of enchantment in a secluded forest retreat.

The distant call of a night owl pierced the night, reminding me we were surrounded by nature’s symphony. As his lips released mine, I felt the weight of the night’s events fade away.
